What do allies do? We honour treaties
We have spent the past two years confronting a dark chapter of Canada’s not-too-distant past. What have we learned since? For one, First Nations and European settlers had a very different relationship—one governed, protected, and maintained by treaties.
Many of these treaties remain in force, and some are are upheld by our courts. Each one has a different story to tell about Canada’s past, present and future.
The Remembering Project invites you to join our brand-new Treaty Discussion reading group, hosted by our very own Kayona Karunakumar.
Our first meeting will discuss a chapter from the book Solemn Words and Foundational Documents: An Annotated Discussion of Indigenous –Crown Treaties in Canada, titled “The Making of the Robinson Huron Treaty, 1850.” This text focuses on the 1850 agreements that brought northern Ontario into the Colony of Canada, recently the focus of a Supreme Court ruling that forced governments to issue back payments.
